Inspired by nature and implemented on the machine – the ibex deburring system.

The ibex (mountain goat) is perfectly adapted to its environment. Thanks to its specialized hooves, it maintains excellent grip even on the steepest terrain and can jump several meters high from a standstill, effortlessly overcoming rock edges or crevices. The ibex is a master at navigating where others cannot proceed. Regardless of the surface, the ibex is rightfully called “The King of the Mountains.”

Agile – in challenging components
We took these characteristics as a model to develop the “KEMPF ibex.” Wherever edges need deburring, this innovative compensating holder is used and demonstrates its strengths. Due to its high flexibility and the ability to deburr with both tension and pressure compensation, the clamped milling cutter adapts to any component geometry and reliably deburrs undefined edges, such as those on cast parts, cleanly, with process reliability, and uniformly. Subsequent manual deburring is eliminated.

TYPE IBEX XS

Perfect for front-side deburring in confined spaces

Features of the ibex XS compensating holder

  • Shortest holder overhang length at only 41.5 mm (without cutter)
  • Designed for use in confined spaces, e.g., on lathes with turret
  • Pressure compensation with 7 mm travel
  • 3 pressure settings adjustable via spring change (SOFT, MEDIUM, HARD)
  • Very high wear resistance, sealed against contamination

The ibex XS compensating holder is designed to accept an ibex cutter via the collet of its spindle. Once the cutter contacts the workpiece edge, the ibex XS’s compensation mechanism allows axial movement. This reliably compensates for dimensional deviations on the component both axially and radially. Thanks to its extremely compact design, most of the ibex XS compensating holder fits inside a collet chuck for 20 mm shank diameter, available for ER25 and ER32.

Ibex deburring system mode of operation

As soon as the milling cutter contacts the edge of the workpiece, it can perform axial movement through the linear bearing compensation of the ibex. In combination with the conical ibex deburring cutters, this also compensates for radial dimensional deviations of the component.

This ensures that the deburring cutter always delivers consistent cutting performance on the workpiece, producing uniform deburring.

APPLICATION EXAMPLE "SHAFT OF AN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION"

Ibex deburring system in operation

In the starting position, the cutter contacts the contour to be deburred, which in this machining example causes the cutter to be pushed upward.

The ibex compensates for this movement and ensures that the cutter quickly returns to the starting position after the deburring cycle.

Ibex deburring system before and after

1. BEFORE:
The large burrs immediately after the milling process are clearly visible.

2. AFTER:
After deburring with the ibex deburring system, a uniform contour is achieved.

 TIPS & TRICKS
• Gentle approach to the workpiece in a quarter circle prevents uneven deburring at first contact
• Increasing feed rate → reduces deburring chamfer
• Decreasing feed rate → enlarges deburring chamfer
• Machine without coolant to avoid thermal shock
• Climb milling prevents chatter marks and produces uniform deburring
• Higher spindle speed improves surface finish
• When space is limited, “ramping” can be used to approach and retract from the workpiece
