CBN Indexable Inserts – Solid CBN or CBN-Tipped

Machining hard and hardened ferrous materials from 40 to 70 HRC is most economical with tools made of CBN (cubic boron nitride) – the second hardest cutting material after synthetic diamond. CBN is highly resistant to deformation and flank wear, extremely fracture-resistant, and chemically stable – providing high resistance to diffusion and oxidation. The cutting material also features exceptional hot hardness, enabling reliable performance at cutting zone temperatures between 250°C and 1,000°C. CBN indexable inserts can be made entirely from CBN for maximum wear resistance and stability. Alternatively, they can be CBN-tipped – these variants are more cost-effective for applications requiring less cutting material (tip length).

Solid CBN indexable inserts are ideal for machining components such as brake discs, manhole covers, or rolls made of sintered steel or cast iron—especially gray cast iron, lamellar graphite cast iron, ductile cast iron (spheroidal graphite iron), chilled cast iron, or other hardened workpiece materials. At high spindle speeds and heavy feed rates, the hardness and thermal stability of CBN deliver excellent results. When selecting inserts, factors such as machine capabilities, workpiece material, and the required surface finish should all be taken into account.
