Back-Burr Cutter & Path:
Deburring System for Curved Edges

Front and back deburring of edges on 3D curved surfaces

SPECIAL DEBURRING CUTTER

  • Micro-grain carbide: sharp cutting edge with high wear resistance

  • High-temperature resistant AlTiCrN coating on types A, AS-3F, and B: wide application range from aluminum to difficult-to-machine materials such as Inconel or titanium

  • Type A-N without coating but with a sharper grind: ideal for machining non-ferrous metals, plastics, and composite materials

  • Spiral cutting edge: produces clean edges and prevents secondary burrs

NC DATA SET (PATH)

  • Consistent edges through uniform material removal along the contour

  • Increased tool life by shifting the cutter’s cutting point

Basically, only two types of tooling solutions are offered on the market for CNC deburring. Mostly, these are tools that perform linear movements relative to the cross-hole while rotating.

A more effective variant is machining with a ball cutter that deburrs contour-parallel along the edge to be machined at two intersecting bores.

However, even with these tools, which are far more flexible to use, difficulties arise when programming the data sets for the contour to be machined. The development team at Xebec in Japan addressed exactly these challenges and developed a comprehensive tooling solution that enables high-quality CNC bore deburring.

The Back-Burr Cutter & Path deburring system is continuously being improved. To make the deburring system as universally applicable as possible, the tool itself is also subject to ongoing innovations. In addition to the previous versions with solid and stepped shanks, the program has now been expanded with two more variants, so currently 4 versions of the Back-Burr Cutter are available.

  TYPE A

  • Standard deburring cutter with AlTiCrN coating and 2 cutting edges up to diameter 5.8 mm, or 3 cutting edges for diameters 7.8 mm and 9.8 mm.
  • This “all-round” cutter can be used for all materials and is also well suited for superalloys due to its coating.
  • The stepped shank provides greater stability even at long overhang lengths.

   TYPE A-N

  • Newly developed deburring cutter based on Type A but without coating.
  • This deburring cutter impresses with an extremely sharp cutting geometry, so an additional coating would have the opposite effect. For this reason, this cutter type is ideal for applications in non-ferrous metals, plastics, and composite materials.
  • The stepped shank provides greater stability even at long overhang lengths.

   TYPE AS-3F

  • Newly developed three-flute deburring cutter with AlTiCrN coating starting at diameter 0.8 mm.
  • This “all-round” cutter can be used for all materials and is especially suitable for superalloys due to its coating.
  • The three cutting edges enable even longer tool life, especially in very hard materials.
  • The stepped shank combined with a shortened cutting length provides greater stability and allows higher feed rates.

   TYPE B

  • Standard deburring cutter with AlTiCrN coating and 2 cutting edges up to diameter 5.8 mm, or 3 cutting edges for diameters 7.8 mm and 9.8 mm.
  • This “all-round” cutter can be used for all materials and is also well suited for superalloys due to its coating.
  • This type features a solid shank, making it especially suitable for deburring tasks in hard-to-reach areas.

The Xebec Back-Burr Cutter is an innovative bore deburring solution that represents a synergy of cutter and NC program, as both components are perfectly coordinated and the tool is optimally utilized.

By creating the NC program individually, the cutter precisely follows the contour of the component to be deburred, safely and completely removing any burrs formed – including on the backside of bores.

It is basically irrelevant which contour shape is to be deburred. Using the coordinate points of the NC program, a “customized” path is programmed for each application, optimizing the tool’s use by considering machining points, contact points, and cutter angles.

Thanks to the machining program, usually only a ball cutter is needed to deburr various bore diameters. The supplied program not only covers simple (round) bore edges but also offers much greater machining flexibility, as orthogonal cross-holes, angled interrupted bores, and bores with breakthroughs can also be processed. This means the user often only needs a single tool for many machining variants, significantly reducing machining time.

Furthermore, the cutter’s intersection point can be shifted during contour machining, which results in more uniform cutting edge load and significantly increases tool life.
